GEOG 327 - Development as Social Theory

Development is a social theory in two senses of the term: development is a theory of socio-economic dynamics; and development is a form of social-theoretical imagination. This course looks at: conventional theories of development as economic growth (classical, neoclassical and mainstream economics, modernization, stages of growth); critical theories of development as social transformation (neo-Marxism, dependency, feminist theories); and poststructural/postmodern theories that critique development as a modernist project (discourse theory, post-developmentalism). It concludes with a brief look at the geography of power involved in the construction of growth and development policies.
