HIST 173 - The History of Racial Thought in Modern Europe

Type of Course: Lecture, Discussion
Surveys European racial thought from the 15th to the 20th century. Places racial thinking over the last five centuries in the context of social, economic, cultural and political trends. Attention is also paid to the history of minority groups in Europe and European encounters with non-European peoples in the wider world. Some effort is made to compare European racial thought to what happened in other countries, such as the United States and Japan. Fulfills the historical perspective requirement.
