Analyzes the development of Yiddish culture as a powerful force for social and cultural change. Drawing on a variety of genres, including folk-tales, drama, poetry, fiction, and memoir, explores Yiddish literature as the locus of the modern revolt against the rabbinic monopoly on Jewish writing and the inspiration for the development of new conceptions of the Jewish community and new visions of the role of the Jewish individual in contemporary society. All course readings will be in translation; no knowledge of Yiddish is required.
