WGS 200 - Topics in Feminist Theory

Topics in Feminist Theory is designed to offer a survey of feminist social theories and practices within academic and public realms, including, but not limited to social movements, print and online media, and other contemporary avenues of critical thinking and exchange. Focus changes with each offering, depending on faculty interest.  May be repeated for credit (taken a max of 2 times).
Spring 2017 Topic: BLACK FEMINIST/WOMANIST THEORY
Black Feminist Theory explores the contributions of women of African descent to feminist identities, theories, and politics as well as explores the intersectional interventions into contemporary critical theoretical frameworks such as psychoanalysis, postcolonialism, and postmodernism. The course emphasizes analysis of works by founding thinkers in black feminist theory and their engagement with mainstream theoretical discourses, with an emphasis on sociopolitical praxis. Beyonce’s visual album LEMONADE will serve as a contemporary touchpoint for black feminist theorizing and praxis, alongside the work of critics, theorists, and literary artists like Angela Davis, Audre Lorde, Margo Okawa-Rey, and Warsan Shire.

This course satisfies WGS Feminist Theory requirement; English D (Theory requirement); and Africana Studies (200 level requirement).
