ENG 222 - Black Political Literary Movements of the 20th Century

This course examines the politics and culture of major black literary and cultural movements of the 20th Century across the Diaspora, including (but not limited to) The Harlem Renaissance (or the New Negro Movement), Senghor and Cesaire’s Negritude Movement, Guillen’s Afrocriollo movement, and the Black Arts Movement. We will explore the legal, political, and cultural zeitgeist that gave way to these periods of highly politicized and radicalized literary and cultural production and the legacies of these movements for the contemporary era in the 21st century. For undergraduate English Majors and minors, this course satisfies the C-3 requirement.
