ID 207 - Culture, Health, and Power: Introduction to Medical Anthropology.


This course will introduce students to the field of medical anthropology, which is the study of the health, disease and curing from a cross-cultural perspective. The course will introduce students to a range of theoretical perspectives within medical anthropology, from interpretive approaches to the political economy of health. Topics covered include cross-cultural perceptions of illness and healing, the social and political context of biomedical interventions, and current initiatives in global health including those addressing AIDS, malaria, and population growth. The course will also examine how anthropological concepts and methods are employed in domestic and international public health and international development.
