COMM 221 - Media Policy and Democracy

This course examines the laws and regulations that structure communication within the U.S. by exploring policies regulating various forms of media. We begin by considering approaches in the late 18th and early 19th centuries to regulating speech and print media in relation to principles associated with democratic communication, and then move to the development of policies established to control technologies of modern communication and their uses. The course considers both the technical parameters and economic considerations shaping different domains of U.S. media policy and the social impact of these structures. Legal approaches to balancing the principles of free-market competition and public interest and their social consequences are addressed.
