EDUC 314 - Young Adult Literature

Education 314 is a graduate seminar designed to engage adult readers in the exploration of contemporary young adult literature. The course will begin with a consideration of various definitions of “young adult literature” as a distinctive genre, offering a brief overview of the emergence and history of young adult literature in English. We will proceed to examine recent award-winning young adult novels in a range of different sub-genres, including realism, science fiction, historical fiction, the “social problem novel” and the graphic novel. In addition to these primary texts, students will read and discuss selected secondary works by scholars and teachers on developmental theories of literary response, the evolution of “YA fiction” as a concept and a publishing category, censorship concerns, and recent debates over the broadening of the literary canon to include young adult as well as classic texts.
