ID 285 - States of Violence: Culture, Trauma, and Identity in Asia

This seminar introduces students to a range of anthropological theories regarding violence, culture, and identity. It asks why particular “genres” of violence are so intimately associated with particular places. It also asks in what ways traumatic events stand in for analytical problems concerning the relationship of “culture” to “history” and to “power” in different parts of Asia as well as the problems they pose for development. Topics include studies of (auto-) genocide, communal conflict, ethnic separatism and counter-insurgency, sectarian strife, and class struggle as well as efforts to attain justice for the dead and the living via tribunals, reconciliation commissions, and memory projects. Open to advanced undergraduates and graduate students with permission.
