MUSC 200 - Audio Culture

In this class, we will explore the conditions and practices of technologically mediated listening both contemporary and historical in everyday experience. The power of music in everyday life is widely recognized‹it influences mood and creates scenes, routines and occasions. As reflected in social theory from Plato to Adorno, music has a profound influence on character, social structure and action. This course will consider how music is a constitutive feature of human agency and communication. Drawing together concepts from ethnomusicology, communications, psychology, sociology and sociolinguistics, we will study music’s active role in the construction of social life and highlight the aesthetic dimension of social order and organization in modern societies.
