MGMT 253 - Analyzing Worcester’s Creative Economy

The creative economy is now viewed as a vital part of any city’s economy because of the blend of jobs created, tourist money, and city reputation. This course will examine the part of Worcester’s economy that focuses on production and distribution of cultural goods, services, and intellectual property. The class will see what other regions have done to encourage and evaluate their creative economies and compare with Worcester. The course will require hands-on involvement in the community via some blend of interviews, focus groups, Web surveys, and other forms of research. We will gather and analyze data, looking at what exists and what goals and attitudes are in place. The result, for the city of Worcester, will be a snapshot of what exists and a blueprint for potential changes. To encourage further action, we will focus on practical recommendations and address potential barriers. The course is a joint venture of the GSOM and the Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise.

This is a GSOM graduate course that is also open to some undergraduate juniors and seniors with strong interest and/or experience in the area.
