Overview

The MBA/MS in Environmental Science and Policy (ES&P) combines MBA requirements with advanced coursework in the department of International Development, Community and Environment. The program focuses on topics such as environmental science, environmental law, sustainable production and development, urban ecology, negotiation and mediation and quantitative modeling.

Graduates from the MBA/MS in ES&P are poised for leadership in environmental consulting firms, international development companies, corporate social responsibility offices, government agencies and nonprofit groups around the world.

Dual Degree MBA/MS in ES&P Requirements

The MBA/MS Environmental Science and Policy dual degree program requires the completion of 24 graduate units. Five units of the 24 units of coursework that a student takes are allowed to overlap and count for both degrees. Students complete the core requirements of both academic programs, as well as electives for both degrees. Dual degree students complete the Dual Degree Capstone IDCE 348  (1 unit in total) in place of the MBA capstone and MS Research Paper requirement. Students begin this project at the end of their second year and complete it during their third year of the program.

ES&P Required Core Courses

The Master’s program in ES&P requires  4 core ES&P course units, 2 units of skills courses, and 4-5 units of ES&P electives. Because some courses can overlap and count for both the MBA and MS degree, dual degree students complete fewer ES&P elective courses than other MS students. You should tailor your skills and electives courses toward your area of specialization.

To learn more about the MS ES&P required core courses, please go to the

  information page.

  •  - Covers the key scientific and technical topics and emphasizes quantitative skills of problem-solving.
  •  - Studies of approaches to regulating hazardous chemicals in air, water, and food.
  •  - Explores the challenges associated with climate change, energy and development from multiple perspectives, disciplines and scales.
  •  - All ES&P Master’s students are required to register for one full unit of this course to facilitate completion of their final M.S. project. This course is taken with the student’s M.S. final project faculty mentor. Students have the option of registering for 0.5 credits for two semesters or 1.0 credit in one semester. This course is pass/fail, the grade designation for this credit will not be given until the student has completed and submitted their final M.S. project.

MBA Required Core Courses

The M.B.A curriculum consists of a combination of seven-week course modules and full-semester, 14-week courses. Modular courses count as 1/2 unit each, while a full semester course counts as one unit. Dual degree students complete 9.5 units of required MBA core coursework, plus the 1 unit dual degree capstone. They also complete 3-4 units of MBA elective coursework. Because some courses can overlap and count for both the MBA and MS degree, dual degree students complete fewer elective courses than MBA students. Five of the units (seven courses) may be waived if equivalent courses have been completed in an undergraduate program, with a grade of B- or better within six years.

Completion of the Career Training Cohort class and a graduate internship are required for all students except: those who have 3 years of relevant professional work experience; those with five or more years of professional work experience, those with full-time employment during the length of the program, and those who are participating in an exchange program (ex. Sorbonne, Trier, etc.). It may be possible to waive these requirements. Visit a member of the Stevenish Career Management Center for more information.

All courses are worth one unit, unless otherwise specified.
