EN 255 - Global Health: Epidemiological Perspective This course will explore current issues in global health from a multidisciplinary perspective, with emphasis on the tools of epidemiology. At a time of immense global changes, we will examine the changing spatial and temporal patterns of disease in developing and industrialized countries; the major social, political, economic, and environmental determinants of health and health disparities; public-health approaches to global health problems at the population level; and major obstacles to health improvements. Using statistical data we will investigate how changes in land use, urbanization, migration, and other factors are changing patterns of heath worldwide. The course has a seminar format with class discussion and student presentations. Case studies will include problems related to environmental health, such as air pollution and respiratory conditions; infectious diseases, such as malaria, tuberculosis, and HIV/AIDS; and chronic conditions, such as type 2 diabetes. Undergraduate/graduate course; by instructor’s permission only.
