ENG 145 - Fabulae: The Genre of Romance

Type of Course: Lecture, Discussion
This course examines the tradition of the romance genre, from classical antiquity to the present. Texts read range from early Greek “novels” and Medieval metrical romances, through the Gothic tale and Romantic poetry to contemporary forms such as science fiction, fantasy and horror. Along the way, students will be able to see how the general conservative elements of a given literary form are transmuted to accommodate a number of specific contexts. For undergraduate English majors this course satisfies the Genre (B-2) requirement.

Prerequisites: Verbal-expression course.
