ENG 285 - Topics in Seventeenth-Century Literature

Type of Course: Seminar
Explores topics in the literary history of the seventeenth century with emphasis in changing ideas in science, history, politics, culture, and science. Depending on the special topic, course may include canonical as well as non-canonical, English as well as New England writing, and texts in a diversity of genres and disciplines. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. For undergraduate English majors this course satisfies the Period (C-lb) requirement. Ms. Neuman and Ms. Vaughan/Offered annually Special Topic for Spring ‘10: RELIGION, SCIENCE, AND THE ARTS During the seventeenth-century, revolutionary changes in scientific thought and religious practice affected every aspect of culture. By becoming familiar with scientific thought and religious controversies of the period, students will gain greater confidence in understanding the specific references and the general worldview of important works of seventeenth-century literature. Throughout the course, select twentieth-century texts will demonstrate how more recent writers have understood of early modern religion and science.
