HGS 135 - History of ArmeniaType of Course: Lecture, Discussion Introduces the history of Armenia from antiquity to the modern times. Examines the formation of the Armenian state as an independent entity, the role of the major powers (eg, Byzantium, Persia), and the social and political institutions under the Armenian monarchies (eg, Bagratuni, Cilicia). Covers the history of modern Armenia from the late-18th to the 20th century, including the development of modern Armenian culture and political life in Ottoman and Russian Armenia. The course examines the emergence of the Armenian national movements, the events leading to the genocide, and the creation of the Republic of Armenia, Soviet Armenia, the re-emergence of the Republic of Armenia after the collapse of the Soviet Union, and the current issues confronting the Republic.
