HIST 281 - China Rising: The People’s Republic of China since 1949

This course explores all aspects of Chinese life from the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 through the harsh reign of Mao Zedong to the reforms of Deng Xiaoping and the dramatic rise of China since the early 1980s. How did the world’s largest country manage to quadruple its economy in the past 25 years? What have been the main continuities and changes in Chinese life since 1949? What are the historical implications of China’s dramatic rise in terms of its society, politics, economics, international relations, and the global environment?
