ID 256 - Open Source Internet GIS and Mapping


Open Source Internet GIS and Mapping. This course introduces core principles and procedures of spatial database development and open source internet GIS and internet mapping. This course emphasizes a hands-on learning approach to real world problem solving. Students will have an opportunity to formulate and design simple web-based tool for a non-profit organization by integrating theory and practice to generate a solution for a real client. Topics to be covered include spatial data model and data representation, principles of open source database design and management, open source internet mapping, and online mapping applications development with spatial databases. Lab exercises will give students hands-on experience in the design of spatial database and structured query language using MySQL. Students will also learn how to develop d:ramic internet mapping applications using PHP, Google API and MyMap with freely available online geospatial datasets. No internet programming or database experience required, but prior GIS knowledge will be very helpful. This course is open to upper level undergraduates and graduate student.
