IDCE 315 - Global AIDS: The Pandemic in Comparative Perspective

Type of Course: Seminar
This course examines the HIV/AIDS crisis across the globe from a comparative perspective. The countries covered include: Brazil, Haiti, Cuba, United States, Russia, the Ukraine, Morocco, Iran, India, Thailand, China, Senegal, Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, and South Africa. The course compares and contrasts the history of the disease in each country, the modes of infection, the impact of the disease on the economy, society and politics, the gendered nature of the disease, the impact of the disease on children (including AIDS orphans), and the responses of local governments and civil society and international institutions, NGOs, wealthy countries and major pharmaceutical companies.
