IDCE 30249 - Theorizing Women, Gender & Development

How did “third world women” and “gender” concerns enter discussions about international (economic) development? How have feminists theorized “gender” and “third world women”? What roles have third world women implicitly and explicitly played in the development enterprise? This module will explore development and feminist theories of women, gender and power to lay the ground work for how these theoretical interventions have been adopted/adapted by development institutions to “improve” the lives of third world women and “empower” them. (First seven weeks of the semester)
