MGMT 6000 - Innovations in Management & Management Education

How are business schools adjusting to the changing needs of business? In this course, students will examine in detail the growing trend in business schools to teach leadership skills alongside functional business skills such as marketing, operations, and finance. Leadership skills (often called soft skills) are often taught by exposing students to innovative ways of thinking, such as integrative, systems, holistic, or associative thinking; or new ways of learning, such as transformative or interdisciplinary learning. Experiential learning and case analyses are primary ways to teach new thinking or learning techniques, with the intended result being improved creativity, decision making, intuition, empathy, or ethical reasoning. This class will investigate what is being taught in innovative programs, why and how it is being taught, expected outcomes, and actual results. We will examine how these programs came into being and their theoretical underpinnings. We will also explore how certain elements of the arts and humanities are integrated into business programs to teach leadership skills. Course readings will provide understanding of broader business issues and of the specific approaches adopted by innovative programs. The bulk of the work in the course, however, will be primary research and analysis.
