ENG 257 - Language Policy: U.S. and E.U.


This course centers on current language policy issues in the context of language ideology. Key issues involved in debates about official languages, language in the workplace, and bi- and multi-lingual education are examined from legal, regulatory, and scholarly perspectives.  Attention is also given to the role of media in shaping public understanding.  Emphasis is on U.S. language policy in comparison to the E.U. For undergraduate English majors, this course satisfies the Period (C-3) requirement, and for Communication & Culture majors, the Integrative Seminar requirement.  Listed with COMM and LAS.
