ID 262 - Famine and Food Security

Access to food is a vital concern not only for many poor countries, but also for poor sections of wealthier nations. Food insecurity is a major obstacle to development throughout the world and can lead to environmental degradation, high morbidity, political instability and conflict. Famine, a condition of severe food insecurity, is often the result of a complicated mix of natural and human-generated factors. This class will consider famine and food (in)security from anthropological, sociological, political and economic perspectives. Case studies will include Africa, Asia and Western countries. The relation between food security and development efforts as the bridge between famine relief and development work, which promotes sustainable food security, will be considered.
