IDCE 321 - GIS and Map Design

Maps are frequently used to represent information about the world around us. Recent years have seen a proliferation in the number of tools and spatial data available for creating maps. Despite the increasing ease with which maps can be created, understanding how to effectively visualize geospatial data remains important. This course covers the key principles of map design and digital cartography to enable students to be able to use GIS software to create accurate, compelling, and visually pleasing maps and graphics that highlight spatial relationships among phenomena. The course structure will consist of lectures, hands-on GIS exercises, and computer-intensive homework assignments to be completed outside of class. This 0.5 credit course is a seven-week module and is open to any graduate student who has completed Introduction to GIS. Undergraduates may register with permission from the instructor.

Prerequisites: Geog190/Geog390/IDCE310 Introduction to GIS
