ENG 164 - The Gothic Imagination

Gothic literature, one of the most popular genres in nineteenth-century England, explored both the dominant culture, as well as its dark underside.  In examining the recurrent themes of family dynamics, sin, nature and politics, the Gothic responded to cultural shifts in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, such as the emergence of revolutionary politics and the changing social status in racial, class and gender identities.  This course traces this body of work from its origins in nostalgic depictions of the past to its culmination in “modern” portrayals of alienation and monstrosity.  Authors will include Mary Shelley, Bram Stoker, and Robert Louis Stevenson.  For undergraduate English majors this course satisfies the Genre (B-2) requirement.

Prerequisites: VE Prerequisite

Anticipated Terms Offered: Every other year.
