ENG 109 - Heart of a Poet - Heat of a Poem: Reading and Writing Poetry

This course is a fresh introduction to reading, writing and appreciating the art of poetry. Through numerous activities and through explorations of poetic forms and devices, students will possess a greater creative, critical and aesthetic understanding of poetry. We will pay special attention to outstanding works by contemporary poets and strive for a balance between reading and writing. As we take advantage of the rich poetic history Worcester offers, we will journey outside of the classroom to embark on literary field trips. Outings might include a trip to a nearby nature sanctuary, the Worcester Art Museum, or the former house of poet Stanley Kunitz. Students will be invited to, and encouraged to, attend poetry readings and events on and off campus throughout the semester. As a culmination of our studies, individual students will create a personal anthology of important poems, and as a group, we will plan a celebratory poetry event to bring written and spoken words to the Clark community. Writers at all levels of experience and comfort with poetry are welcome, but energetic, committed participation is a must. Through the primal power of poetry, we will be surprised. We will be moved. We will have fun learning the heat and heart of poetry.
