ID 274 - Sustainable Development: Romance and Realities

The term “sustainable development” was most famously defined in the 1987 report by the World Commission on Environment and Development as “…development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Since then, much ink and energy has been spent over “ecological and economic sustainability.” Yet we sink into the 21st century, amid looming fears of ecological catastrophes and socio-economic crises. We yearn for sustainable development even as we face conceptual confusion and political conflicts over how to achieve it. This interdisciplinary seminar invites students to understand this impasse and redefine the terms of the sustainability debate.
