HS 116 - Island Tales: The Science and Literature of Oceans and Islands

This course uses a comparative literature framework to explore storytelling in the humanities and natural sciences. Using islands and oceans as both metaphors and objects, it will explore how literary studies portray the natural world through stories and myths; how storytelling varies among different types of writing; and how storytelling (or the lack thereof) impacts knowledge of the natural world. It builds on the natural sciences and language, literature, and comparative cultural studies to explore the intersection of these often disparate views of the nature and culture.
