ID 133 - Gender and Refugee Issues in International Development

More than 43 million people worldwide are now forcibly displaced as a result of conflict and persecution. Some are refugees who fled their home countries, while others are people who remain displaced by conflict within their own homelands. 80% of refugees are women and children. What is the impact of conflict and displacement on the development of states?  How does conflict affect women, men, and children differently?  These questions can be answered by untangling the nexus of conflict, gender, and refugees. In this course, students will analyze intersecting strands of literature: gender and development, conflict and development, conflict and gender, and gender and refugee resettlement.  Lectures, writings, country case studies and films will illuminate the gender dimensions of development, conflict and post-conflict resettlement of refugees. Students will have the opportunity to strengthen their critical thinking, presentation and writing skills through close reading, in-class discussions and debates, essays, exams and a policy memo.
