ENG 101 - Introduction to Creative Writing

This course serves as an introduction to the study and craft of creative writing (a minimum of three genres) and exists as the prerequisite for 200 level courses in the creative writing stream. In this course we will look deeply at the individual and world views presented by many authors while critically analyzing their works for style, form, and employment of craft elements. We will then use these exemplars as inspiration for our own creative pieces, continually asking, What makes good writing?
To increase students’ awareness and competence as writers and to allow for an appreciation of various creative writing forms, students will be asked to complete an independent study and subsequent review and presentation of a book on craft and will attend at least two literary events in the Clark/Worcester community.
An integral part of this course will be run as a writer’s workshop where students will gain valuable feedback on their writing from peers and achieve a deeper understanding of craft through reading and responding to the works of classmates. The steps in the process of writing will be emphasized and performed: drafting, revising, editing and publishing; a final portfolio of three polished pieces in various genres will be required.
