BCMB 237 - Chemistry and Biology of Medicine


Modern Medicines, ranging from anti-HIV treatments to cholesterol-lowering drugs, have become completely interwoven into society.  This course will explore a wide range of medicines, especially focusing on (1) how their molecular structure and function allow them to interact with the biological molecules and cells of the human body to produce the desired health effects, (2) the general process of how new medicines are developed, and (3) the current challenges and diseases that still remain areas of ongoing reasearch.  This course is intended for juniors, seniors, and graduate students with backgrounds in both Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry (prerequisite for undergraduates: CHEM 131 and BCMB 271, minimum C+ in each)
