SCRN 291 - Capstone Course - Variable topics Advanced studies of specific issues and approaches in screen arts. Topics vary.
Fall 2016 Topic: War Film & Anti-war Film
The war film, a genre defined by the depiction of scenes of military combat, traditionally has sustained a deep complicity with ideologies justifying war and particular wars. This capstone course looks at notable examples of the genre, reading each in its historical context as an engagement with broader discourses about war and arguments for and against the justness of wars of the day. The course also explores films that represent the effects or aftermath of wars. Readings include critical analyses of the films shown as well as theoretical and philosophical writings on war and resistance, and on the relationship between representational media and the logics of war. Authors include Virilio, Baudrillard, Negri, and others. Filmmakers include Renoir, Spielberg, Kubrick, Malick, Herzog, Bigelow, and others.
Prerequisites: SCRN 101 or Permission.
Anticipated Terms Offered: Offered periodically.
