IDCE 30330 - Introduction to Community Health and Social Change The public health system in the US is not a straightforward or easily navigable structure. Different organizations have a wide range of responsibilities, roles, and investments in the population’s health, whether they realize it or not, and questions of who is responsible for health have been debated for centuries. With a new ideology backing public health in the US, that every citizen deserves healthcare, it’s important to look at what that means, how far that goes, and who it leaves out. This course will examine the many intricacies of public health by focusing on the defined responsibilities and functions of health and healthcare agencies through an examination of case studies as far ranging as seat belt laws and Hurricane Katrina. We will consciously employ an analytic lens that highlights power, privilege, health disparities, and health justice as we consider a variety of public and community health challenges.
