CHEM 381 - Polymer Science This course is designed as an introduction to polymer science, incorporating previous knowledge from organic chemistry, basic inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry to illustrate the key aspects governing the structure-property relationships of macromolecules. An overview of both traditional and state of the art polymer synthesis and polymer characterization techniques will be provided. Several examples from primary scientific literature will serve to integrate the concepts covered in class and will expose the student to relevant technological advances that rely heavily on polymer science. This course seeks to provide students with a broad perspective on how chemistry can be used as the primary tool for developing new materials or modifying existing polymer systems to achieve specific performance targets. A design project will be utilized to engage students in their own research interests through the application and integration of the course material.
Prerequisites: CHEM 132 or CHEM 134 , CHEM 260 (or BCMB 264 ) or permission of instructor. Completion of CHEM 231 , CHEM 250 and CHEM 262 are recommended, but not required for graduate students.
Anticipated Terms Offered: Offered periodically
