IDCE 30306 - GIS for International Development


This graduate-level course investigates how GIS is used to better understand and address social problems in the context of international development.  Specific topics are related to the Sustainable Development Goals and include participatory community mapping, disaster management, global health, water and sanitation, poverty and hunger alleviation, climate change impacts, conflicts, migration, and human rights. Students will learn about international GIS data sources, practice their GIS skills using commercial and open source software, and read and critically evaluate current literature on these topics. Students will have the opportunity to conduct their own independent research and make class presentation on the topic of their interest.

This course counts as skills course for IDCE graduate students.

Prerequisites: IDCE 310
