SOC 282 - Power and Community

This course examines power, community, and their intersections, asking how power operates in and on communities and how communities build power of their own to solve problems together. We will investigate what power is and how it works in different contexts; what community means to whom and why; the historical contexts of power relationships; and the processes through which communities have historically developed and contested power and how those processes may be changing today. We will approach both of our key concepts-power and community-as historically situated and constantly evolving formations whose intersection profoundly influences social life. Our focus is primarily on urban communities in the contemporary U.S., we will look at examples from other times and places as well, and students are encouraged to choose research projects addressing other national contexts.
