CRES 050 - Introduction to Swahili Language and Culture

Swahili is the most widely spoken African language. This course will introduce students to beginner’s standard Swahili, diverse forms of cultural production, and the sociopolitical factors that shape the varying levels of popularity of Swahili throughout Eastern and Central Africa. Students will engage in cultural products such as Swahili music and food, and develop competence in reading, writing, listening and speaking the language through a variety of exercises, such as dialogues and role-plays. No prior experience with the Swahili language is necessary, beginners are welcome.
