PHIL 245 - American Pragmatism

This course covers the origins and historical trajectory of American Pragmatism. Pragmatism aims to resolve difficult or muddled ideas or concepts by focusing on how these ideas or concepts are put to productive and meaningful use. Pragmatism emphasizes experience and how our concepts do-or don’t-make sense of experience. As experience is limited, pragmatism recognizes that all knowledge claims are fallible, subject to revision in light of future experience. Finally, pragmatism recognizes that knowledge is produced by truth-seeking communities, not individuals acting alone. We start with 19th century philosopher, C. S. Peirce and his philosophical context, and follow the philosophical development of pragmatism through William James, John Dewey and more recent contemporary contributions.
