MGMT 5235 - Corporate Climate Action and Social Innovation

The course imparts knowledge about climate change, its implications for business and strategies to address risks and opportunities. Impacts of climate change include rising sea levels, changing weather patterns and extreme weather, pressure on water and food, political and security risks, human health (physical and mental) risks, and impact on wildlife and ecosystems. Emphasis is placed on Social Innovation to respond to climate change.

“Social innovation is the process of developing and deploying effective solutions to challenging and often systemic social and environmental issues in support of social progress. Social innovation is not the prerogative or privilege of any organizational form or legal structure. Solutions often require the active collaboration of constituents across government, business, and the nonprofit world.”

- Sarah A. Soule, Neil Malhotra, Bernadette Clavier, Stanford Graduate Business School

In support of experiential learning, students will develop a Climate Action Plan (CAP) for a corporation which may involve improvements in energy efficiency, moving away from fossil fuels, changes in land use and agriculture practices, geoengineering as well as adaptive and resilience initiatives for communities in which the firm operates. The project should align with the student’s area(s) of interest and be supportive of his/her career aspirations. Given the uniqueness of each student’s competencies and goals, teams are typically not appropriate. However, depending upon on the number of students enrolled, it may be necessary to form teams.
