ARTS 266 - Sculpture Studio This is a revolving topics course and will focus on a particular material, method, or contemporary theme in sculpture.
May be repeatable for credit.
Spring 2024 Topic: Materiality in Thought
This course tackles the conceptual indexes of object making, function to non-function, ornamental, and assemblage. Working primarily in the wood, metal(s), and plastics, students will explore usages of craft, composition, repurposed objects, deconstruction, and intervention. The body, architectural, film, and sociopolitical investigations will be explored, through the works of Terry Adkins, Ana Mendieta, Alberto Giacometti, Ruth Asawa, Constantin Brancusi, Claes Oldenburg, Betye Saar, Martin Puryear, Marisol Escoba, George Nakashima, Harry Bertoia, Louise Nevelson, Anthony Gromley, Ursula von Rydingsvard, Barbara Hepworth and Theaster Gates among others. Requirements include regular attendance, active participatory discourse, and four projects. This is an intermediate to advanced level course.
Prerequisites: Any ARTS course
