SSJ 30393 - Social Applications of GIS


This class investigates how GIS can help visualize, understand and respond to an array of social and environmental issues. Specific topics include sustainable development goals, critical GIS, community development and planning, geo-demographics, public health, environmental justice, and spatial accessibility. Students will read and critically evaluate current literature on these topics, use commercial and open source GIS software and conduct a research project on the topic of their interest.

Formerly IDCE 30393. Students who have already passed IDCE 30393 cannot receive credit for SSJ 30393 and should not take this course.

Prerequisites:
SSJ 310 - Intro to Geographic Information Science  (formerly IDCE 310) /GEOG 190  or SSJ 388 - Advanced Vector GIS  (formerly IDCE 388)

Anticipated Terms Offered: varied
