ID 224 - People on the move research studio ID 224 People on the Move Research Studio -Food Migration and Belonging in Thessaloniki- offers students the opportunity to visit actual ‘places of displacement’ in key contemporary contexts, and to learn about integration and belonging of refugees and displaced people on the move from local organizations. This year ID 224 People on the Move Research Studio introduces students to the city of Thessaloniki as a place of both forced displacement and integration, and an example of how urban transformations are connected to mobile ways of being and belonging in a sedentary world.
The focus of this year’s class will be food culture as a lens of integration. We will learn about the history of Thessaloniki as an example of cosmopolitanism as well as a site of ethnic cleansing and genocide, and how its unique culinary history helps to tell this story. We will explore current concepts of belonging and policies of integration (social, political, and economic) and how contemporary ideas of national identity and the international migration management system contribute to the growing number of people considered to be “out of place.” ID 224 draws upon academic materials from urban, migration, diaspora, and mobility studies, and provides lectures and site visits that connect students to Thessaloniki’s cosmopolitan history and contemporary refugee and migrant populations. Students will conduct a hands-on project on food and migration in the city.
