MATH 112 - The Mathematics of Voting and Social Choice

“What is the best way to vote?  What should that even mean?  Can we have a way of voting that incentivizes everyone to vote “honestly”?  Can we actually measure the power of our vote?  What about the power of a politician?  While these seem to be questions from political science, in this class we will learn that mathematics can also offer deep insights.  For example, we will show that no voting system can ever be truly “fair,” and we will understand why that is the case. This course makes no use of calculus; all that is required is some familiarity with basic logic and with symbols and variables. Therefore, students whose primary interest is in the social sciences or the humanities are absolutely welcome and encouraged to attend.”
