SUMMER 2024 TOPIC:

Wildly Unnerving: True Crime on the Appalachian Trail  - examines murder and missing persons on one of our countries most beloved hikes. The AT, completed in 1937 and today managed by the National Park Service, is over 2,100 miles from Georgia to Maine. Unfortunately, the ‘Footpath of the People’ has encountered persons who have brought brutal harm to others. This special topics course examines specific cases, illustrate the complex role played by law enforcement and investigators, and consider how these crimes are represented in different media outlets.  Content Notice: We analyze selected crime cases and related adaptations with respect to the victims and their families. In this course, we are likely to touch on sensitive topics, including (but not limited to) racism, homophobia, sexual assault, abuse, class and gender issues, graphic violence, that are difficult for some people to confront or discuss. If you anticipate acute distress as a result of encountering a particular topic, please check the plot (crime case and related adaptation) before watching or reading. Please take care of yourselves and each other.
