SCRN 219 - Advanced Production Topics Spring 2025 Topic Experimental Film
Through an immersion in studio projects and experimental video history, this course focuses on the conceptual and fundamentals of film and video. The historical component of this course tracks the timeline of the experimental film via the “Sony Portapack”. This instrumental unit gave portability and readiness for the artist, which in turn shaped the development of narrative storytelling, performance, installation art, and conceptual film movements around the world. The series of studio projects in this course will engage the filmic aspect of video and media in contemporary art. This course will review and discuss the works of Chris Marker, Pipilotti Rist, Nam June Paik, Sadie Benning, Wong Kar-wai, Paul Clipson, George Kuchar, Penelope Spreeris, and So Young Kim, among others. Requirements include regular meeting attendance, active participation in class discussions, and five projects.
This rotating-topics course engages students in various subfield-specific production topics, with instruction by professionals in each area. Semester-long course topics will include: cinematography, editing, and experimental filmmaking.
