MSEA 3440 - Special Topics

This course addresses current or timely topics in Sports and Esports Administration.  Special Topics can vary from semester to semester.  Course may be repeated for credit if topics are different.

SPRING 2025:

This course explores the ability of amateur student-athletes to access their common law rights of publicity also referred to as Name, Image and Likeness (“NIL”). Rules related to amateurism, including NCAA regulations, prevented student-athletes from exercising these rights for decades. The 2021 U.S. Supreme Court case NCAA v. Alston changed how educational institutions, their athletic programs and supporters are operating and how student-athletes are now compensated via NIL and other means. Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the evolution and the legal environment surrounding NIL opportunities, including collectives, agency law and financial management, as well as limitations and NCAA regulations that are still applicable to both institutions and student-athletes. Finally, this course will examine how NIL is expected to alter the future of the amateur sports business and its participants.
