ENG 217 - Early Asian/American and Pacific Islander Literature This course primarily explores English-language literature by people of East Asian, Southeast Asian, and Pacific Islander descent from the early nineteenth century to the beginning of World War II. Through a selection of novels, memoirs, plays, poems, and other writing, we will consider social issues such as imperialism, decolonization movements, migration, indigeneity, race and racism, gender, sexuality, class, and the environment.
For English majors this course satisfies the D-2 requirement. For English minors, this course counts as a 200-level English seminar.
This course will be eligible as an elective course in the Asian Studies major.
Prerequisites: The standard prerequisite for this course is one prior course in English at the 100-level. Students who have taken a course in literature in a foreign language (e.g. Spanish, French, Japanese) at the 100-level may be admitted to the class with instructor permission.
