IDND 027 - Writing: True Crime in Media & Literature

From magazines, nonfiction books and true-crime-based novels, to feature-length films and TV-shows, podcasts, the Internet and social media, true crime has become a global phenomenon and one of the most successful genres within the American cultural landscape. This course explores the success of true crime as a multi-platform genre by focusing on representations of true crime in media and literature. We will begin by looking at a history of the genre and its sensationalized presence in American society while also weighing related tropes like the white savior narrative and the missing white woman syndrome against BIPOC victim narratives that receive far less attention.
