GEOG 353 - Foundations and Horizons in Geographical Political Economy

This course will examine geographical political economic approaches - approaches which take the mutual constitution of the political and economic as a starting point, and insist that these are always spatial. Proceeding through a number of key themes, we will critically review scholarship which has been foundational to geographical political economy as well as assessing the potential directions that geographical political economy is or could be headed. Themes may include markets, labor, uneven development, regulation, racial capitalisms, and social reproduction but also socio-natures, socio-legal approaches and ideation. As a seminar course, close readings of the literature will be required in order to engage in critical discussions. The course will benefit from a number of sessions which have been planned with faculty and students running similar courses at other North American universities.
