SSJ 30180 - Principles and Ethics in Community Engagement

This unique seminar prepares students for the ethical challenges of research and practice, asks students and faculty to reflect on their positionality and power, and introduces students to the scholarship and practice of a subset of IDCE faculty each semester. This Seminar engages in a set of related questions:

Knowing/ Being: How do we understand our own roles and privileges in our research and practice? Why do we need to engage in diverse ways of knowing and being? How do we harness our awareness to engage with diverse communities?

Ethics: What does principled and ethical community engagement mean? How does our department train and prepare students to work in and around the world from this conceptual perspective?

Engagement: How do we understand and navigate power dynamics among individuals and institutions? What are the possibilities and challenges to these different approaches of community engagement?”

Engaging with these questions serves to ground our degrees in a set of core values and shared language. We imagine that this will be an evolving conversation as different groups of faculty and students engage. In doing so, this will help us build and grow the department as the conversations expand and deepen.
